439 . WAR OF 1898 ( 5 ) MAINE SHIP BUTTONS PLUS ( 3 ) RARE LITHO TABS . The first five buttons all depict the Maine and were issued shortly after it exploded in Havana Harbor Feb . 15 , 1898 . Each has a W & H back paper with one of the 1.25 ” buttons ( flags below ) having a thin paper paste over hand dated March 7 , 1898 ”. Two of five have famous slogan “ Remember The Maine ”. The other three are from a series . 75 ” dia . litho tin , each with two . 25 ” metal prongs on reverse to facilitate wearing . These read “ Remember The Maine ”, U . S . Cruiser New York , and “ Cuba Libre ”. First and last have a couple tiny paint chips . All are rare . VF to Exc . ( H ) $ 100.00 440 . WWI BRITISH & AUSTRALIAN SIX RARE HOMEFRONT BUTTONS C . 1915-18 . Sizes are 7 / 8 ”, 1-3 / 8 ” and four at 1.25 ”. First two picture and name Field Marshall Horatio “ Kitchner ”. He became famous during the Boer War and was British Secretary of State for War from 1914 until he was killed in action June 5 , 1916 . Larger has blank back paper , British made . Smaller has very rarely seen back paper “ Made By Baldwin & Gleason Co . New York , USA ”. Third shows Kitchener on right while on left is Admiral John Jellicoe who commanded the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland , May 1916 . British made . The last three are Australian issues two dated 1918 and other from same era . First shows Egyptian Sphinx with “ State War Council / Help Those Who Are Helping You 1918 ”. Second shows Aussie soldier and two supply laden camels before the Pyramids of Giza . Tiny red star above with initials of Australian Comforts Fund . Last ramrod straight standing kangaroo with “ The Fighting Kangaroo /‘ Let ‘ em All Come ’”. All six are Exc . and all are only examples we ’ ve seen . Rare . ( H ) $ 100.00 441 . 1917 BRITISH MACHINE GUN COMPANY IN FRANCE FOOTBALL COMPETITION MEDAL IN STERLING . Medal is 1-3 / 8 ” tall plus moveable ring . Medal is sterling with four hallmarks on reverse below text reading “ 192nd Machine Gun Company Football Competition France 1917 .” Front shows three players , soccer ball and in distance a tiny figure before the goal . The 192nd used Vickers machine guns and was attached to the 6th Infantry Division . Their 1917 engagements included Battle of Hill 70 and the Cambrai operations in France on the Western Front known as the Hindenberg Line . Bottom front has tiny British Registration number . Tiniest edge wear on reverse . Exc . Rare . ( G / H ) $ 100.00 442 . WWI “ PREPARE ” BULLET STICKPIN & TWO “ PREPAREDNESS ” PINS . First is 13 / 16 ” tall solid metal figural bullet in gold luster with stickpin on back and word “ Prepare ” on the front . Accent 2 ” flag ribbon is fraying badly on right but much less so on left . Bullet is Exc . Second is small 5 / 8 ” enamel and brass pin reading “ Preparedness ”. Last is 7 / 8 ” w / W & H back paper . Front text “ Peace Or War / Home Preparedness For Baltimore ”. Tiny dot cello indent below “ For ”. Full gloss . All VF and all rare . ( H ) $ 100.00 443 . “ SLAP THE JAPS ” PLUS FOUR ANTI-JAPAN HOMEFRONT BUTTONS . Two smaller are 1 ” and three larger are 1.25 ”. None with maker ’ s name . “ Slap The Japs ” with rwb “ V ” for Victory is a scarce cello . The three 1.25 ” are all cello with the two slogan buttons from two series of anti-Axis text buttons . The third pictures a generic Japanese soldier . Last “ To Hell With Japan ” is litho and much scarcer than the 1.25 ” cello version . Tiny paint wear but VF and others are Exc . to NM . ( H ) $ 100.00 444 . GALLOWS BUTTON WITH ACTUAL STRING NOOSE “ RESERVED FOR HITLER ”. 1 ” no maker . Reverse cello by collet has tiny 1 / 8 ” hairline split , likely as made when the collet was pressed in . The button is otherwise NM . Also on back is knotted end of twine to anchor the twine noose on the front which is about 2.5 ” long . The noose is beautifully formed ( sometimes they unravel ), although the knot was not made to slip on the rope as it would in reality . Among the top anti-Hitler small collectibles with about six offered in our 58 years . Scarce . ( I ) $ 200.00 445 . MacARTHUR FOR PRESIDENT C . 1948 COLLECTION OF 14 BUTTONS & RELATED . Sizes are 7 / 8 ” to 1.75 ”. In the bottom row are two unbent litho tabs and one “ For President ” string tag . Among the buttons are six cello and four litho . First two in row one have small stain traces . Both remain glossy . The “ Don ’ t Backtrack Vote ‘ Mac ’” is rare and has curl naming “ Best K . C . Mo .” The 1.75 ” below this is also rarely seen in that size . The word “ President ” appears on three items and the words “ For America ” on five . 446 . “ BOMBARDMENT OF FORT McHENRY BALTIMORE 1814 ” RIBBON BADGE FOR 1914 COMMITTEE MEMBER . 5.5 ” tall with ribbon back naming Baltimore maker Hyatt Mfg . Co . Front has three celluloid pieces : first is badge bar inscribed “ Committee ”, second a pinned on . 75 ” real photo button of “ Francis Scott Key ”, whose 1812 poem “ Defence of Fort M ’ Henry ” became the lyrics for The Star Spangled Banner , and third a gorgeous color cello scene of the American flag flanked by six cannons firing shells at the British ships in the harbor which in the end forced the British to abandon their plans for a land assault on the crucial port city of Baltimore . The defeat led to the War of 1812 peace agreement later that year . The ribbon badge has gold text “ September Demonstration ” plus initials of the fraternal group Junior Order of United American Mechanics . Our second seen . NM and rare . ( H ) $ 100.00 447 . W . F . CODY / BUFFALO BILL PURE SILK PORTRAIT 1887 IN ORIGINAL T . STEVENS MOUNT . 5-3 / 8x7 ” stiff cardboard mat with portrait ribbon sealed in center window by a large paper label covering the reverse . Reverse bio of Cody detailing his life as a government scout , guide and Indian fighter . Concluding sentence is “ He is now Colonel of Militia on the staff of the Governor of Nebraska .” However , this portrait “ Woven In Pure Silk By T . Stevens , Coventry ” ( England ) dates to 1887 , four years after he founded Buffalo Bill ’ s Wild West in 1883 .
