602 . 1909-13 M101-2 SPORTING NEWS SUPPLEMENTS ( SEPTEMBER 23 , 1909 ) HONUS WAGNER ( HOF ) PSA AUTHENTIC ALTERED . From same series as previous lots . Honus Wagner , nicknamed “ The Flying Dutchman ” for his superb base stealing ability , began his illustrious career w / the Louisville Colonels in 1897 before shifting over to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1900 along w / a number of his Louisville teammates . Honus would star for the Pirates for the next 18 seasons before ending his playing career in 1917 . He would lead the NL in batting average an amazing eight times and won his sole World Series championship in 1909 besting the Detroit Tigers and his contemporary rival , Ty Cobb , 4 games to 3 . Wagner received the ultimate honor by becoming an inaugural member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame class in 1936 . Back top edge has pair of 1 ” tape strips as this was once framed . Also has four . 5 ” margin tears w / tape repairs on back . A pair of vertical crease lines run on either side of his image but much of this blends . Image remains bold and sharp . ALEXANDER ( HOF ROOKIE ) PSA 1.5 FAIR . From same series as previous lots . Grover Cleveland Alexander began his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies ball club of the National League in 1911 . Alexander would spend the first seven seasons of his career with Philly , these would also prove to be his prime years as he would accumulate an astounding total of 190 wins during that time , including three straight 30-win seasons from 1915-17 . Following his Phillies tenure GCA would pitch for the Chicago Cubs and St . Louis Cardinals before wrapping up his career back with Philadelphia in 1930 . Grover would be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1938 . Alexander has traditional baseball cards issued in 1913 , a National Game card and a Tom Barker game card , as well as a 1914 Cracker Jack card and a T222 Fatima card but this M101-2 Sporting News supplement is considered by many to be a GCA rookie as it pre-dates the others by 2-3 years . The PSA grade does not reflect the exceptional eye appeal of this item which far exceeds the 1.5 Fair grade . Front displays bright , clean and with sharp image . Minimal handling wear mostly only seen upon close inspection . Joss finished with a 160-97 career won-loss record along with one of the lowest career ERA ’ s in baseball history at 1.89 and remains the all-time MLB leader for career WHIP at 0.968 . Addie was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978 . Remains clean w / strong , bold image and has great eye appeal despite the grade of 2 Good . From same series as previous lots . Having begun his career before the turn of the century in 1896 , Nap Lajoie was one of baseball ’ s brightest stars of the 1900s-1910s . Lajoie compiled one of the top five all-around batting seasons of the 20th century during 1901 , winning the AL Triple Crown w / a . 426 batting average to go along w / league leading totals of 14 home runs and 125 RBI ’ s in addition to topping the AL in runs scored w / 145 and doubles with 48 . Nap would finish his MLB career with a . 338 batting average , accounting for three AL batting titles , and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 .
