Cobb was one of five inaugural members of the first National Baseball Hall of Fame class of 1936 . Honus Wagner , nicknamed “ The Flying Dutchman ” for his superb base stealing ability , began his illustrious career with the Louisville Colonels in 1897 before shifting over to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1900 along with a number of

his Louisville teammates . Honus would star for the Pirates for the next 18 seasons before ending his playing career in 1917 . The Flying Dutchman would lead the National League in batting average an amazing eight times and won his sole World Series championship in 1909 besting the Detroit Tigers and his contemporary rival , Ty Cobb , 4 games to 3 . Wagner received the ultimate honor by becoming an inaugural member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame class in 1936 .
