506 . SPANISH AMERICAN CUBAN WAR TWO FIGURAL BRASS SHELL RARE STICKPINS FROM 1898 . First at 2-3 / 8 ” long is the American flag ( separate and held solder dot ) flying above a big cannon barrel with text in red on the brass panel below “ Death To The Spaniards .” Second is larger at 2-7 / 8 ” long and has unusually large figural depiction of a full figure Uncle Sam holding a much smaller man aloft by his collar while commanding him to “ Walk Spanish ”. Both VF with vast majority of hand applied paint . From a series of around six different designs . Rare . ( H / I ) $ 100.00 507 . CUBAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE INCREDIBLE TRIGATE REAL PHOTO BUTTON W / MAXIMO GOMEZ , JOSE MARTI , AND ANTON MACEO C . 1896-97 . 1.25 ” with 1896 or possibly 1897 W & H back paper listing their three button patent dates below the name and address : Chicago Ilustrado Pub . Co . 97 Clark St . Chicago Ill . We ’ ve not found any information on this company . The button has no text as at the time these three men would have been widely recognized as Cuban independence fighters . At left is Cuban-Dominican Generalissimo Maximo Gomez famous for attacking Spaniards and sympathizers with his scorched-earth policy . At center is Jose Marti , known as the Apostle of Cuban Independence who died May 19 , 1895 . At right is Antonio Maceo known as The Bronze Titan ( for surviving battle wounds ) who was second in command of the Cuban Army of Independence and who died Dec . 7 , 1896 . Exc . A just discovered example of a previously unknown button . Rare . ( I / J ) $ 200.00 508 . 1899 CARTOON BUTTON SOLDIER KICKS OFF HIS UNIFORM WITH VIGOR UPON BEING “ MUSTERED OUT .” 1.75 ” w / W & H back paper along w / curl text “ Copyright 1899 .” In addition , the front edge at 8 o ’ clock carries artist name of C . A . David . Wonderful design of elated Spanish-American-Cuban War soldier shedding his hat , jacket , pants , suspenders and shoes- leaving only his long johns and one red striped sock . This is the photo example ( and only known example ) from Button Power by Carter and Hake shown on page 175 . However , when book was done , the year of 1898 was assigned and only recently saw the 1899 curl copyright . This button goes back to the Joe Stone Collection acquired in 1975 and upon which the 1986 book Collectible Pin-Back Buttons 1896-1898 was based . NM . ( J / K ) $ 300.00 509 . WWI C . 1915 AUSSIE KANGAROO IN HAT KICKS THE KAISER ’ S HELMET AND HIS ALLIES FEZ CARTOON BUTTON . 7 / 8 ” with ornate b / w backpaper reading “ Alfred E . Stokes Maker / 228 Pitt St / Sydney .” This button shows a kangaroo wearing Australian style hat kicking up his feet at hats representing two members of the Quadruple Alliance . The picture of the fez with tassel represents Mohammed V ( Mehmed V Sultan of Ottoman Empire ). The other hat represents Kaiser Wilhelm ’ s helmet . The text surrounding the kangaroo reads “ Fight On / Fight Ever / Boycott German Trade .” The white background of the button has tiny gray speckles giving it a slight gray tone but this is as made as the microscopic marks are under the celluloid and on the paper but not stain . Piece still displays glossy and VF . Only example we ’ ve seen . An outstanding WWI cartoon button . See next related button by same maker . ( H ) $ 100.00 510 . WWI C . 1915 BUTTON SHOWS AUSSIE SOLDIER PUNCHING KAISER WILHELM IN THE MOUTH WITH RIM TEXT “ EAT THAT ”. 7 / 8 ” with back paper of same maker as previous related button naming “ Alfred E . Stokes .” Paper gives an address in Sydney and has the following text “ Manufacturer Of Photographic Reproduction , Colored Patriotic , Carnival & Campaign Buttons Etc .” They did an outstanding job on this button which has rim text reading “ Australia /’ Eat That .’” Pictured at center is uniformed Australian soldier socking the surprised Kaiser Wilhelm in the mouth . Tiny text above “ Victory & Peace .” NM . Only example we ’ ve seen . ( H ) $ 100.00 511 . ANTI-WAR PRE-WWII ERA COLLECTION OF NINE BUTTONS . 5 / 8 ” to 1.25 ”. Two lithos and seven cellos . Include phrasing : “ The Yanks Are Not Coming ”; “ No Foreign War ”; and “ Keep U . S . Out Of War .” All have only minor to light wear . All Exc . to NM . A nice grouping of isolationist and anti-war pins in the years leading up to America ’ s entry into WWII . ( H / I ) $ 100.00 512 . WWII COLLECTION OF 14 VICTORY “ V ” HOMEFRONT BUTTONS . 5 / 8 ” to 2.25 ”. All have the “ V ” for victory on them . Top left has “ Committee To Defend America ” text . Large button reads “ Victory Service For Defense .” Some have the ( dot dot dot dash ), which is Morse code for “ V ”. First button on left on bottom row has some moisture staining , and is Fine . All others have minor to light wear and are Exc . to NM . ( H / I ) $ 100.00 513 . MacARTHUR “ 1000 LB . WASTE PAPER ” WWII HOMEFRONT SALVAGE AWARD BUTTON . 3.25 ” overall w / 1.25 ” button . This design was issued w / various designations and we believe this is only the second we ’ ve seen specifying “ 1,000 LB . Waste Paper Award / MacArthur .” Some fading on red color of ribbon , otherwise glossy w / moderate surface wear on cello that is only seen in reflected light . Still Exc . ( I ) $ 200.00 514 . STALIN & HITLER WWII CELLULOID MECHANICAL TOY C . 1943 . 2.25x 3.25 ” die-cut flat celluloid , comprised of four celluloid segments , three rivets and two anchors on reverse holding a spring . Stalin is quite graphically movable by holding Hitler ’ s boot and moving the tab below Stalin ’ s boot left and right . At the extreme position , Stalin ’ s member is visible . Hitler w / swastika armband reads his book “ Mein Kampf ” as he bends over . Stalin wears hammer and sickle armband while he grasps Hitler ’ s shoulders . All three sections of the Stalin figure move while the Hitler figure is stationary . Only the third example we ’ ve seen of this wartime 1940s novelty . Light wear w / vibrant color . Exc . ( J ) $ 300.00 515 . WORLD WAR II CRACKER JACK ANTI-JAPANESE HANDOUT . 2-3 / 8x3.25 ” card features “ A K . O . For Tokyo ” w / anti-Japanese graphic of boxer w /“ V ” for Victory boxing glove striking stereotypical depiction of Japanese man wearing Rising Sun flag . Bottom features patriotic design w /“ Remember Pearl Harbor ” text , dating this piece to early 1942 . Only handed out to Cracker Jack Co . employees and was not for general distribution through their products , which equaled a very limited print run . Back features quote from Franklin D . Roosevelt from his May 27 , 1941 fireside chat radio speech titled “ On An Unlimited National Emergency .” Of note , Cracker Jack was awarded wartime food contracts . Evenly aged w / scattered handling wear including corner crease at upper left . Still VF overall .
