7) Student Support
& Belonging
The University should provide and deliver a variety of high
quality support, representative to student need.
What Students Want...
Having a welcome class activity/event will aid in the integration between class mates
and give them confidence to openly contribute to class related discussions. The
university should ensure that all students have access to a personal tutor and also
encourage students to make use of them. These should give personalised advice
as well as directing students to specialist support when they need it. Peer support
should also be encouraged to build up a sense of community among classes.
What are the benefits...
An increasing amount of relevant team-building/engaging activities will ensure
friendships will be formed. The class as a whole will engage and the students will
gain academic and industry relevant information. Students should be encouraged to
work together and feel comfortable in class settings. With a vast range of cultures
and EU/International students, it’s important to try and create links between all
students at the University. Peer support allows students to get guidance from
people who can directly relate and understand their situation. It can help to create
a sense of belonging that can be the difference that keeps a student engaged and
interested in their studies.
Student View
“I suffer with a mild case of cerebral palsy and see
Hannah to help with work when i have plans or drafts,
she has really helped me with revision skills and essay
writing.” – Hannah Topping – Student Services – Newport
