Domaine de
LA BAUME
BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY
The Prat family founded Domaine de la Baume in 1880.
Their wines are
elegant, creativ

us
Highly innovative for the time, Jean Prat, a
rich Béziers landowner, was a trailblazer
by exporting his wines to Paris at the
beginning of the 20th century. Generation
after generation, the domaine prospered
and was bought, successively, by an
Australian group in 1990, and in 2003
by the Helfrich family from Alsace, who
already owned several major French
wineries.
Year after year, the domaine has
modernised itself to become today a very
fine shop window for around 30 classified
vintages produced by the group’s
possessions on different terroirs in the
region.
Even if la Baume has demonstrated a
genuine wish to focus on modernity and
development, it remains a place where a
traditional welcome is preserved.
The soul of the winery is Paula, in charge
of sales. She has expertly welcomed
customers for the past 15 years. A born
salesperson, Paula never stops thinking
up convivial ways to help new customers
discover her domaine and the wine-based
events and activities she organises are
proof of this. In April they will hold the 5th
edition of the “Soirée Filles” (Girls Night),
“It’s the girly event of the domaine”, Paula
explains. We talk about all the things that
interest us, makeup, jewellery, clothes,
interior design...
And, of course, we also taste wine and food
in a musical ambiance! The “Afterweeks”
keep the months of May, June, July and
August busy and the new thing for 2018
is the “Nocturne By La Baume” with the
winery opening its doors in the evening for
convivial evenings with wine at the heart
of the event. Finally, in November, “La
Baume es en fête” (la Baume celebrates)
enables participants to prepare the end
46
of year festivities with products from
the terroir and arts and crafts, and one
guiding principle: quality.
For an initiation to wine tasting, a wine
school and culinary workshops are hosted
by Christelle, the chef at Cooking Cake,
who invites you to learn about wine and
dish pairing. When you ask Paula about
her favourite wine, she replies without
hesitation, “les Mariés”, a Sauvignon
Blanc... irresistible.
The entire range of single-grape varieties
take their names from the 19th century
land registry, and one can imagine they
were the names of land given as a dowry.
In any case, for the 3rd year running, la
Baume has hosted a marriage fair called
“Lovely day”. It says in their marketing
brochure that “The Domaine de La Baume’s
ambition is to marry tradition and modernity”
– nothing could seem more true!

JARDIN DE SAINT-ADRIEN
The Jardin St Adrien is one of the
most spectacular sites of our region.
The dream of a native of our region,
the ancient quarries dating to the
middle ages have been gradually
transformed into a green space, a
paradoxical oasis set on volcanic
rocks. In this place of contrasts, the
walker passes from areas of natural
rock with wild and scented flowers to
the cool and intimate shade of pine
trees. Four bodies of water give a
striking touch to this extraordinary
landscape.
Voted favourite garden of the French in 2013.
