Learning about how “We are all family,” Kayoung Choi holds up her coloring of four Matryoshka dolls (Russian Nesting Dolls) to show Mr. Freeman. Afterwards, Mr. Freeman reads ‘On A Camping Trip’ to her. 3 1 1. Kain Choi and Hayden Choe sit together and design costumes for their Matryoshka dolls. These dolls were very special in that they were designed to fit inside of each other and change their outfit with each doll. 2. Using the class markers, Justin An and Leo Chun color the Marvel Comic character ‘The Hulk’. The students used these drawings as puppets in a story telling game. Mr. Freeman is known for enjoying comic books, so he frequently used the characters as learning tools in his classroom. 3. Ain Watanabe peels off a home learning sticker as a reward for participating in a learning activity outside of class. Mebuki Sodeoka waited patiently to the side and contemplated which sticker she would like to select as her reward. 4. Gathering around Mr. Freeman, Justin An and Jacob Kim tell Mr. Freeman a story idea that they plan to act out for the class later that day. Mr Freeman recorded their ideas on the computer. 5. Enjoying the sunlight on a rather cold winter day, Hayden Choe rocks back and forth on the swing as she watches her friends play tag. With only two swings, students learned the importance of having fun and sharing with one another, so that everyone got a turn on the ever-favored swings. 6. Dressed in a jumper, Cindy Xu participates in play based learning with Pedro Ward. Cindy played the role of a cat, while Pedro played the role of the owner. Play-based learning helped students gain a better understanding of their social worlds. 2 5 _GSIS Yearbook-ES_Part 1.indd 17 4 6 17 4/16/16 10:29 PM
