Premiership juniors of ‘52 together again
Nine members of the Old Scotch Football
Club’s junior premiership team from 1952, and
team manager Alec Stewart (‘49), got together for
a reunion during the club’s pre-match luncheon
at McQueen Financial Park (Camberwell Sports
Ground) on 3 June.
Team Captain Jim Ogilvy (‘51), who unfortunately
was unable to attend the lunch, gave the ball used in
the final to club stalwart Geoff McCracken (‘65), who
had it restored and mounted for display in the Old
Scotch clubrooms.
The 1952 team was the first junior team Old
Scotch had ever fielded in the Victorian Junior
Amateur Football Association. In an epic last quarter
in the final, which was the second final between the
clubs in two weeks, Old Scotch came from behind
to defeat Ormond 13.9.87 to 12.6.78 by nine points,
after trailing by 42 points at three-quarter time.
The previous week Old Scotch had defeated
Ormond by 17 points in the final, but under the
system prevailing in the VAFA juniors at the time,
Ormond (having finished on top of the ladder, four
premiership points clear of the field) had the right to
challenge Old Scotch in a subsequent game if they
lost the final.
