New season, and a
great tour planned
for the cricket club
The Old Scotch Cricket Club had a successful
2016/17 season under the guidance of new
Captain/Coach Matt Grose (‘06). The 1st XI
stumbled at the final hurdle on the Scotch Main
Oval in their attempt at winning back-to-back
premierships, and the 2nd XI made the finals after
a lengthy absence but were unable to get the job
done against Old Xaverians in the semi-final.
Congratulations go to the indefatigable Gary
Bennett (‘88), who not only won the 1st XI club
bowling award but also took out the competition
bowling award with a total of 23 wickets. Cameron
Melville (‘13) won the 1st XI club batting award
for the first time, Mark Griffiths (‘80) wound back
the clock to win the 2nd XI batting, and Ben
Summerfield (‘11) won the 2nd XI bowling award
for the first time. Vic Nicholas was named best
clubman.
The 2017/18 season is just around the corner,
and the club has gained the services of gun
batsman Matt Mitchell (‘12). It is also actively
seeking new players of all abilities for the upcoming
season. Please get in contact with Matt Grose
(‘08 – details below) if you are interested in playing
in a well-run 40 overs one-day competition, played
in great conditions and in excellent spirit.
The club is also inviting current and
prospective players, supporters and all Scotch
Family members with an interest in cricket to
tour with the club to Sri Lanka in July 2018. The
13-day tour, departing on 30 June and returning
on 12 July, includes a thoughtfully p lanned
itinerary with five cricket matches in various
locations, sightseeing trips and memorable cultural
experiences. The tour cost is $3250, which
includes flights, transport, accommodation and
most meals.
The club will hold an information night in
October where our tour adviser, as well as current
players and committee members, will be present
to discuss important information about the tour. To
express your interest in participating in the tour, or
for a copy of the full itinerary, please contact Matt
Grose: matthew.grose@willihigh.vic.edu.au or 0413

OLD SCOTCH BUSHWALKERS AT THE REBORN KINGLAKE NATIONAL PARK.
Old Scotch bushwalkers take on the
reborn Kinglake National Park
Most of the 19 walkers who participated in
our Old Scotch bushwalk in Kinglake National
Park earlier this year had either not been to the
national park before, or had not been there since
the devastating fires of February 2009, so it was
a fascinating walk for us all.
The first of our two walks was of 6km from
the Blackwood picnic area to Mount Sugarloaf,
where the distant city was only just visible
through the haze. Our walk was through a low
forested area, with beautiful views at times
visible through the trees. After a short break
we returned to the car park, for lunch in the
sunshine.
Refreshed, we headed off to see spectacular
Mason Falls, walking through a beautiful forest of
tall mountain ash and grey gums, with luxuriant
ferns thriving on the forest floor. The walk
downhill was a little steep and rocky, but the
return track was mostly up a series of small hills.
We forged ahead along the Boundary Track,
and completed our wonderful 5.5km walk at the
picnic area. We then headed off to the nearby
Flying Tarts Cafe for great cakes and coffee
before our drive home.
A huge amount of work has been done to
make the park accessible to visitors. The scars
of the fires are still evident but camouflaged with
an enormous amount of regrowth.
