Soccer Club OSMaD P R E S E NTS 19 th - 28 th OCTOBER 2017 Geoffrey McComas Theatre, Scotch College Music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus Tim Rice Based on an idea by Tim Rice Lyrics by BY ARRANGEMENT WITH ORiGiN™ THEATRICAL ON BEHALF OF SAMUEL FRENCH LTD. ABOVE: NICK SHEARER (YEAR 12) AND HIS COUSIN SAM SHEARER (’10) Cousins together in soccer Cousins Sam (’10) and Nick Shearer (Year 12) have enjoyed the experience of playing together this season in the Old Scotch Soccer Club’s senior team. For both Sam and Nick, rewards have come their way in their developing soccer careers. Sam is OSSC Captain, and last year took out the best and fairest award in Football Federation of Victoria’s Men’s State League 2 South-East division, just the second time in the soccer club’s 35-year history that one of its players has won the competition’s best and fairest award. (The previous winner was Andy Probyn (‘88), who is now well known to ABCTV viewers as political correspondent for current affairs program, 7.30.) Sam is a midfielder with OSSC, and also co-coaches the club’s inaugural junior team, the Miniroos. Sam also plays for the Old Scotch Cricket Club, where he is Club Vice Captain. Nick is Captain of Soccer at Scotch, and is a school Prefect. He has been a member of the 1st XI Soccer team since Year 10, and was runner-up best and fairest the last two seasons. He was also selected in the APS representative soccer team this year. Earlier, he represented Victoria in soccer at under 13 and under 14 levels, and he also played futsal for Victoria as an under 11 and under 12 boy. Sam says it has been fun playing soccer with his cousin. ‘Nick has adapted well to senior football and has put in some very solid performances so far,’ he told Great Scot. ‘There is no doubt that the passion and talent for the round ball didn’t come from his immediate family, so I’m definitely going to claim the credit.’ ‘Although starting to make me feel old, it has brought back some great memories of my time as a 17 year old, playing games for the school in the morning and the senior OSSC team in the afternoon. In that year of doubling up, we managed to get the club promoted to the State Leagues and those are my best footballing memories. ‘I have made lifelong friends from those times and remember fondly how well Jonny Beamish and I were accepted by the older boys. Hopefully Nick continues to enjoy himself and can one day look back fondly at similar successes with our great club.’ Chess is a musical regarded as the most popular fictional portrayal of chess ever created. Inspired by the political Cold War machinations shadowing the 1972 World Chess Championship between Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union, Chess is the story of a love triangle between two grandmasters - one American, one Russian - and a woman who serves as a manager to one of the players but falls in love with the other. With lyrics by Tim Rice, long-time collaborator with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Elton John and others [Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Aladdin, The Lion King] and with music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, of ABBA fame, this is a fabulous music-rich theatre experience.
