Highs and lows in
our winter sports
Our first teams experienced some significant
highs and lows throughout the APS winter season.
While we were extremely competitive in most
sports, it was a season of close finishes and
missed opportunities.
Our 1st XI Soccer team had four wins, three
losses and two draws, and although we finished
fifth, we were just minutes away from equal
second position. A late equaliser in the final game
against Wesley cost the team several spots in
a tightly contested APS season. However, the
team won the Rose and Thistle Cup against our
Melbourne Grammar School rivals, coming from
a goal down to retain the trophy 3-1. Our Captain,
Nick Shearer (Year 12) and coach, Zed Mihajlovic,
should be commended on the way they led the
team all season.
The 1st V Basketball team won seven and
lost four games, and unfortunately we missed out
50
narrowly on the top four re-draw after the initial
fixtures. The team also finished fifth, concluding
the season strongly with four consecutive wins.
Cross country finished sixth, with Ed Beischer
and Charlie Schilling (both Year 12) being the
most consistent performers for the team. The
1st XI Hockey team was equal fifth, after finishing
the season on a high by winning the final three
games. Scotch won six games, lost four and had
one draw. There were some positive signs for
the future, as the squad was made up of many
under-age players. The team was led again by Old
Boy coach, Tom Sinclair (‘09), who continues to
develop our boys and ensure a competitive effort
each week.
The 1st XVIII Football team won the Cordner-
Eggleston Cup for the second year running, with
a comprehensive performance on the Main Oval
on 28 July. The boys played an inspired brand of
football in front of approximately 2000 spectators.
While Melbourne Grammar started the game well,
Scotch steadied and took control with some great
rebounding off half-back by the Captain, Joel
Garner (Year 12) and Will Kelly (Year 11).
Will Sutherland (Year 12) was an imposing figure
up forward, kicking four goals for the game, and
taking some big pack marks. The end result was
a comprehensive victory for Scotch by 54 points,
12.11.83 to Melbourne Grammar’s 4.5.29.
Although the 1st XVIII only won three games for
the season, they were usually right in the contest,
and were only narrowly defeated by eventual
premiers and runners-up, Haileybury College and
Carey Grammar School.
The 1st XV Rugby team struggled all season
against better opposition, and despite their best
efforts and improved performances, we were
unable to record a win. Captain Max O’Brien (Year
