Hundreds of students, parents, teachers, Old Boys and distinguished
guests were present to witness Scotch’s sixth annual Science Oration,
held in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre at Scotch on 15 August.
The Oration, entitled ‘The Molecular Machines that Create your Flesh
and Blood’, was delivered by Dr Drew Berry, who is a renowned scientist
in the field of biology. Dr Berry is best known for his ability to animate and
recreate the biological processes found inside and outside us. Currently,
Dr Berry works as a biomedical animator at the Walter and Eliza Hall
Institute of Medical Research, where he has worked since 1995.
In her welcoming address, Head of Science, Dr Marta Cassidy,
emphasised that science allows us to see the beauty in the world, whether

it is from a snow crystal or from the recent discovery of potassium
4-hydroxbenzoate trihydrate by the Scotch crystallography group.
There was a very engaging presentation by Ben Lloyd (Year 12)
on his automated, smart watering system, which incorporates smart
technologies such as weather tracking and moisture levels in the soil, with
the ultimate aim of reducing water wastage. Introducing Dr Berry, Scotch’s
Science Ambassador, Dr Atit Bhargava, noted how Dr Berry combines his
skills as an artist and animator with his great knowledge of biology and
microscopy to produce fascinating and glamorous animations of some
of the most complicated biological processes.
Throughout Dr Berry’s presentation he exhibited some of his
remarkable work, not only those which have given him the most
