BOTTOM: STAFF, STUDENTS AND PARENTS GATHER IN THE FOYER OF THE JAMES FORBES ACADEMY AFTER THE EVENT RIGHT: DR BERRY EXPLAINS THE PROCESS OF CREATING BIOLOGICAL ANIMATION TO THE AUDIENCE. OF BIOLOGICAL ANIMATION of Scotch's 2018 Science Oration recognition, but also what he thinks to be his most important work. These animations included showing us how polymerase chain reaction works, how malaria is transferred, from both the human and mosquito perspectives, and how adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, is synthesised. Something special about Dr Berry’s work is his great ability to reach the masses. He said he is not for ‘dumbing down’ complicated scientific processes, but making them comprehensible through visualisation and translating the scientific language. This intersection of complicated and ground-breaking biological discoveries and ease of comprehension allows Dr Berry to educate people of all backgrounds, regardless of their scientific knowledge. Dr Berry taught us how it is important to focus on what we enjoy doing, and to pursue our goals not in the hope of wealth, but rather for doing something great. These words of advice came straight from Dr Berry’s own life experience, especially in the early years of his career. We thank Dr Bhargava and Head of Science, Dr Cassidy, for organising this year’s inspiring Oration. The Science Oration continues to be a highlight of the school calendar, and no doubt next year’s Oration will be no exception. For more information please contact Dr Bhargava: [email protected].
