NEWS SPORT SWIMMERS TRIUMPH IN THE ALL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP SCOTCH SWIMMERS WITH THE VICTORIAN ALL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY Scotch has podium finishes in 14 of the 15 events Scotch’s swimmers will be the only APS swimming squad to finish off their season with a trophy this year, after winning the Victorian All Schools Championship on a Thursday evening at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. This is the third time Scotch has won the title since the event was reintroduced into the swimming schedule in 2012. Scotch dominated the meet, finishing on the podium in 14 out of 15 events, and on a few occasions had both ‘A’ and ‘B’ relay teams finishing in the top three. The 15 and under age group was Scotch’s strongest, winning five out of five relay events. Three Scotch swimming records were broken at this event: the under 16 4 x 50m medley relay (Max Boesley (Year 11), 46 Great Scot Issue 159 – May 2020 Harry Hay (Year 9), Dominic Tsui and Toby McOmish (both Year 10)); the under 16 4 x 50m butterfly relay (Dominic Tsui, Toby McOmish, Justin Tan and Tiernan Lim Joon (both Year 10)); and the open 4 x 50m backstroke relay (Dominic Tsui, Thomas Hay, Jack Boesley and Darren Tan (all Year 12)). The open backstroke relay was also an All Schools record. Captain of Swimming, Thomas Hay came as close as you possibly can to breaking the open 50m butterfly record, recording 26.01 seconds, to be marginally outside Benno Negri’s (‘16) record of 26.00. School Vice Captain, Darren Tan was due to break a different type of record this year when he was to become the first ever Scotch boy to swim at the APS finals eight times. Although the cancellation of the finals took that opportunity away, he was recognised for his excellent service to Scotch swimming, becoming the first ever boy to be awarded the Swimming Perelberg Trophy more than once. The trophy is awarded each year to the swimmer who, in the opinion of the coaches, has shown that he is a devoted and keen swimmer and fierce competitor, gracious in victory and defeat, determined and enthusiastic in training and competition, hard working with a positive attitude, and best exemplifying Scotch Spirit. Darren exemplifies those qualities and is a most worthy trophy winner. RYAN NOLAN – TEACHER-IN-CHARGE, SWIMMING
