GUS BERGER (’ 89 ) is the Producer and Director of a documentary film about the attempted ‘ modernisation ’ of Melbourne in the 1950s , when fine buildings – many dating from the ‘ Marvellous Melbourne ’ era of the 1880s – were demolished in a misguided attempt to revamp the city for the 1956 Olympic Games . The Lost City of Melbourne is a story of ‘ Marvellous Melbourne ’ – before ‘ Whelan the Wrecker was here ’.
Gus Berger operated two cinema companies which closed during Victoria ’ s COVID-induced lockdowns . He started to speculate on what had happened to the glorious hotels and spectacular cinemas , and in the process he trawled through old photos at the State Library , watched old films at the National Film and Sound Archive , read books and conducted interviews .
As Gus ’ cinemas reopened after the lockdowns , The Lost City of Melbourne was born . The film premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival before opening in September at cinemas in Melbourne and regional Victoria . It was the highest grossing Australian documentary in 2022 .

1990s
SIMON ANGUS (’ 98 ), son of DAVID ANGUS (’ 71 ) was inspired to become a physics teacher by outstanding Scotch educators , including Tim Hurst and Syd Boydell . Simon has enjoyed sharing his love and passion for physics with students over the past 20 years in schools across Australia and overseas .
He has now returned to Melbourne with wife Emily and sons , Henry , Max and James , and continues to be a Demons tragic . Simon is Deputy Headmaster and Head of the Secondary School at Brighton Grammar School , where he still passionately teaches physics .
After Scotch , CHARLES WEYHAUSEN (’ 95 ) completed additional education in Germany in wholesale and foreign trade . He entered the packaging industry , working in sales for the Altana group , before moving into technical service and relocating his family to the USA . In 2012 he returned with the family to Germany to work for Actega DS , working as a Brand Owner Manager and leading the transition of food closures to PVC-free technology worldwide .
Today , Charles is the Sales Director for Asia for Actega Metal Packaging Solutions , and is frequently in Australia for business combining these trips with visits to family and friends . Charles and his wife Maike are the proud parents of James ( 15 ), Lewis
( 12 ) and Jack ( 9 ). The family lives in Achim , Germany .
After leaving school , CHRISTIAN BROMLEY (’ 98 ) coached senior hockey squads at Scotch , while studying Arts and Commerce ( Hons ) at Monash University and fitting in a ski season in Colorado . Work in financial services at AXA led to a stint in the UK with Vodafone HQ and Lloyds Bank , where he made the most of visits to Europe , principally Italy , Croatia and France , including seeing Cadel Evans ’ 2011 Tour de France victory .
Returning to Australia in 2013 to their Clifton Hill home , Christian and his wife Georgina have since welcomed Chloe , aged six and Sebastian , aged three .
Christian now works for the ANZ Bank in project delivery and reporting , and since 2021 the family has been based on the Gold Coast . Christian and Georgie also operate GeorginaChristian . com , which produces micro-sized eco shopping bags that attach to keychains .
Changing focus from hockey after university , Christian raced 100-125cc karts for more than 10 years , competing around Victoria , and he now races mountain bikes in Victoria and Queensland . Seeking an entry in the world-renowned ABSA Cape Epic eight-day stage race in South Africa , Christian recently went to Smithfield , Cairns for the Reef to Reef stage race .
NATHAN GILFILLAN ( was STAHLE at Scotch ) (’ 98 ), a member of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers , was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Australian Regular Army on 30 November 2022 , by the Army ’ s Director General Land , Brigadier Marcus Fogarty ,
