While attending a 21st birthday party in Deniliquin NSW , JAKE ZOGOOLAS (’ 06 ) was involved in a horrific accident when he was accidentally doused with two litres of burning petrol which someone was using to rekindle a dying campfire . Jake suffered burns to 69 per cent of his body , and for two and a half weeks he was in an induced coma . A year on from Jake ’ s accident , his mother , Janet Roach , was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder .
For Jake and Janet , despair and hand-wringing would have been an understandable consequence of the misfortune which they had endured . Instead , they took positive steps : they created the Roach Foundation ( www . roachfoundation . org ), which is dedicated to providing help to burns patients and their families in the treatment of the injuries and in rehabilitation . The foundation is partially funded by community donations and partly through sales of Raw Essentials , a company founded by Janet Roach , which produces an award-winning range of 12 tea varieties .
In late 2023 Jake will depart on an epic bike ride from Sydney to Melbourne to raise funds for the Roach Foundation .
