MCCOMAS (’ 69 ). Searching the internet in 2020 , Philip found Vic living in retirement at Oundle in Northamptonshire , UK , and they met in England last September .
Vic , newly married and arriving in Australia as a ’ Ten Pound Pom ’, has great memories of teaching at Scotch from 1968-70 . He revelled in teaching , rowing and rugby coaching , and the camaraderie of the staff , with the Latin class a particular joy . Vic recalls Senior English Teacher Gordon (‘ Gunner ’) Owen , revealing his wartime incarceration in Changi jail . Vic ’ s only jarring recollection is Principal Colin Healey ’ s insistence that staff wear gowns even as the temperature hit 100 degrees !
Vic remains very good friends with fellow teacher Peter Crook ( Scotch staff 1967-2001 ). He has sometimes encountered Scotch people at the Henley Royal Regatta ; one greeted him with ‘ It ’ s Mr Northwood ! You coached me in the under 15B Scotch rugby team .’ He also once attended an orchestral concert in England in 2003 . The conductor looked familiar : it was TOM HEALEY (' 69 ) also from that 1968 / 69 class ! In 1968 , when first hearing ‘ we ’ ve looked the whole world over and we know ’ in the College Song , Vic was sceptical , but after a lifetime in teaching he is now inclined to agree !
