At the 2022 OSCA Presidents ’ Dinner , held on 16 November in the Boykett Room , Cardinal Pavilion , which followed the 2022 OSCA annual general meeting , six devoted OSCA club members received OSCA Merit Awards . These awards are bestowed on those whose commitment to an OSCA club or society has been outstanding , in the view of its members .
The 2022 OSCA Merit Award recipients were : Paul Torcello – Old Scotch Rugby Club , Cardinal Club , OSCA ( awarded posthumously ); Neil Hart-Smith (’ 60 ) – Old Scotch Bushwalking Club , Koomerang Ski Club , Masonic Lodge ; Eng Hwa Tan – Old Scotch Badminton Club ; Mark Purvis
(’ 75 ) – Old Scotch Athletics Club ; John Montgomery (’ 59 ) – Old Scotch Football Club ; Kay Edwards OAM – Old Scotch Film Society .
PAUL TORCELLO was part of the group which re-established the Old Scotch Rugby Club in 2013 , and he remained a mainstay of that group until his untimely death in November 2021 . Indeed , he built the club ’ s very spirit and is sorely missed . He also contributed generously to the Cardinal Club and to OSCA itself .
Paul could speak with anyone and make them feel at ease ; people loved being with him and he ’ d always pitch in . His special gift , however , was in photography and the creation of flyers . He loved to create flyers and everyone loved to inspect them . He created many iconic designs for the Rugby Club , the Cardinal Club and for OSCA .
Although not an Old Scotch Collegian , Paul generously used his skills to build a strong and dedicated community . He started as a Scotch parent in 2000 when his son Anders (‘ 12 ) began in Prep . For five years the family was based in Sweden while Paul , a renowned photographer , completed photo shoots for clients all over the world . In 2006 , Paul and Anders returned to Melbourne in time for Anders to start Senior School and play Scotch rugby .
