SCOTCH ROWING BUILDS TOWARDS THE FUTURE

STRONG PERFORMANCES DESPITE THREE COMPROMISED SEASONS
The 2022 rowing season was the third compromised rowing season since the government lockdowns began in 2020 . Over this period , rowers and staff have been challenged to find alternate ways of training and improving .
The 2020 crew contended with the bushfire emergency of January 2020 , which saw the camp relocated to southern Tasmania . Prior to this , the crew had won Melbourne Head and Head of the Yarra , in the latter event beating a strong Sydney Rowing Club crew to win the school eight division . Over the racing season in Term 1 the crew was undefeated . This included the NSW School Eight title , which was completed before wild weather caused the regatta to be abandoned . With two weeks of the season remaining , and the Head of the River and Australian Championships looming , the season was abandoned .
In 2021 , the Boat Club negotiated multiple lockdowns and was able to participate in most of the regattas , including the Australian Championships in Tasmania . The 2022 season began with the resumption of school during Term 4 . Boys spent much of the season readjusting to life at school . All crews from Year 9 to senior level dealt with ongoing changes in personnel as close contact and COVID absentees required daily crew lineup changes .
Despite the premature end to the 2020 season and the compromised nature of the 2021 and 2022 seasons , it has been
pleasing to see some of the achievements of Scotch rowers . Tom Heerding (’ 21 ) and Ben Symons (’ 20 ) were selected in the 2022 Youth Eight for Victoria which raced at the Interstate Regatta on 3 April at Nagambie .
Rising star Fraser Miscamble (’ 19 ) was named in the final squad for the King ’ s Cup ( the senior Victorian eight ), that raced in the Interstate Regatta at the conclusion of the Australian Championships in Nagambie . Fraser joined Alex Wolf (’ 15 ) in the 10-man Kings Cup squad .
In other news , two members of the cancelled 2020 season found their way to a US Ivy League College . James Isles (’ 20 ) secured a place at Dartmouth , an Ivy League College on the east coast of the United States . He joins Angus Emmett (’ 17 ) at this college . Josh Hill (’ 20 ) also gained admission to Yale , joining Marcus Emmett (’ 19 ) on the rowing roster .
These recent admissions add to the 27 Scotch rowers who are currently at , or have graduated from , colleges that include Yale , Harvard , Princeton , Washington , Cal Berkley , George Washington , Dartmouth , Syracuse , Brown and Boston University . The US college pathway is a unique opportunity for Scotch rowers to gain admission into world class institutions and mix with talented people from around the world . The Boat Club recognises the efforts of all boys over the past few years . TOM WOODRUFF – 1ST VIII COACH AND DIRECTOR OF ROWING
