What struck me most was that when it came to giving back to Scotch , this group was by no means done . I received several thoughtful suggestions about further Foundation initiatives , and Roger Gillespie (’ 68 ) spoke passionately from the floor , pointing out that there was still much to be done at the School , and encouraging Forbes Society members to consider further contributions . We are fortunate to have these supporters and all the others who make up the 1863 members of our Foundation .
It was another opportunity to reflect on our history , with our founder James Forbes ’ picture looking over proceedings . Forbes made a significant contribution to the church and to education in Melbourne , and his untimely death aged just 38 years occurred several months before our foundation date of 6 October 1851 . Then , on the mild evening of 6 May , came the much-anticipated opening of the Tolson Centre , during which friends of the School gathered to celebrate and recognise all those who contributed to this project . We now have a safe repository for our Archives , a Scotch Shop , and a welcoming home for OSCA . In respect of that I was privileged to acknowledge Leigh McGregor (’ 55 ), Frank Shew ( SC 1860-66 ), Keith Wilson (’ 27 ) and Frank Crawford (’ 25 ), four great Old Scotch Collegians whose names are now prominent in OSCA House . These men have contributed much to our School .
As I write this Melbourne is in lockdown six , NSW is in strife , and our best-laid plans are all tinged with an overlay of uncertainty . We have postponed the Rioli Family Indigenous Scholarship Fundraising Dinner , and we were uncertain whether the Foundation President ’ s Dinner would proceed on 7 October . We were fervently hoping that it would take place , as there is always so much to celebrate .
