8 . came close to defeating opposing teams , but couldn ’ t win critical periods in the game despite their best efforts .
A tough draw early in the soccer season didn ’ t help our boys to gather any momentum . There were two byes in the opening three fixtures , followed by games against eventual co-premiers Carey and Haileybury . Our boys showed improvement as the season progressed , highlighted by retaining the Pelman Cup with a 1-1 draw against Peninsula Grammar . The boys walked off the field in this midweek game to get the sad news that their season was effectively over .
It was great to see close to 100 boys back participating in our Scotch fencing program . We were the best performed school throughout the season , and were the winners of the Junior ( Years 7-9 ) Secondary Men ’ s Epee Tournament . We finished a narrow second in the Senior ( Years 9-12 ) Secondary Men ’ s Competition . Daniel Fernando ( Year 11 ) and David Zhang ( Year 9 ) were our standout senior and junior fencers , winning several silver and bronze medals in individual events .
Unfortunately , the interschool snowsports and gymnastics competitions were called off . Many of our boys had worked extremely hard in the lead-up to these events , and were understandably disappointed with the news .
Although the APS v AGS representative games did not take place , selectors still named their teams . Scotch was well represented : basketball – Lachlan Maddern ; cross country – Nathan Munro ; football – Sam Darcy ( Vice Captain ), Hamish Francis ; hockey – Finn Hodder , Oliver Marshall ( Captain ); soccer : Xavier Joyce .
Despite the frustrations , I am extremely glad that all boys were able to take to the sports fields and courts and represent the School . The current climate is far from ideal , but I encourage boys to keep fit and active , make the most of physical activity opportunities provided at school or online , and understand that we will soon get back to some further normality .
I also thank the Year 12 boys for all they have contributed to the sports program . We wish them the very best for their senior sports careers and look forward to welcoming them back as Old Boys .
