The Ottumwa High School ’ s theater department was honored at the 2018 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase for its October 2017 production of “ The Addams Family .” They were again honored in 2020 by the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards for the production of " The 25th Annual Putnam Co . Spelling Bee ." The production received a Distinguished Scene Award for the opening number . The ensemble also received special recognition . Individual students were honored as well , the Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role was awarded to Brent Williams for his role as " William Barfee ," and two students were honored with special recognition for their Performance in a Principal Role : Lorna Bauer for her portrayal of " Olive Ostrovsky " and Cole Denner for his portrayal of " Leaf Coneybear ." ottumwa Municipal band The Ottumwa Municipal Band is comprised of adult musicians from Ottumwa , Bloomfield , Fairfield , Fremont and other neighboring communities . While the group does hold auditions as a formality , anyone over 18 is welcome to join the group . Members range from Realtors , to stay-at-home parents , to teachers . The Ottumwa Municipal Band has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating municipal band in the state of Iowa .
