American Gothic Performing Arts Festival Through the years the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival has established itself as a cultural destination event for not only the residents of Wapello County , but for people from all over Iowa and beyond . Each year folks come together to celebrate the performing arts in an open and friendly atmosphere . World-renowned as the setting for Grant Wood ’ s painting “ American Gothic ,” Wapello County provides a nostalgic setting for audiences and performers alike with its natural beauty , abundance of preserved historical architecture and impressive selection of performance venues ( and so many welcoming communities !). Indian Hills Theatre Each year students at Indian Hills perform two to three full productions . Students also gain hands-on experience in the technical aspects of theater , including makeup , set and scenic design and construction , costume design , special effects design , and lighting , sound and operations . Theatre production seasons include contemporary / modern theatre , Shakespeare and period plays , and Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals . The students have performed in “ The Man who Came to Dinner ,” “ Legally Blonde , The Musical ,” “ She Kills Monsters ,” “ A Midsummer Night ’ s Dream ,” “ Dracula ,” “ Fame , The Musical ,” “ The Taming of the Shrew ,” and , most recently ,“ Clue : On Stage ,” “ Mamma Mia !”“ Coney Island Christmas ” and “ Auntie Mame .” Upcoming productions include " Holiday Channel Christmas Movie Wonderthon " and " Pippin ." Ottumwa Area Community Choruses
( Adult chorus / Children ' s chorus ) These two community choruses provide singing and performance opportunities for both children and adults from this area . OACC holds its annual concert in November ; however , the 2020 event was held in a virtual format with all singers masked and spaced 6 feet apart . The performance was posted on social media with DVDs delivered to local rehab and nursing centers in lieu of caroling for them . The organization is also working on hosting a collaborative and wide-reaching “ Messiah Sing-Along ” in December , which will include other local and regional choruses in addition to OACC singers . Other performance opportunities are available throughout the year with an average of six to eight performances annually . Typical additional performances include collaborations with the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra , AGPAF , and the Ottumwa Municipal Band . The most recent fall concert included a total of 75 singers between the two choruses , ranging in age from 6 to 85 years old . Both choirs are directed by Dr . Christine Bergan . Ottumwa Community Children ' s Playhouse Sit back and enjoy talent way beyond its years . The Children ’ s Playhouse , now in its 17th season , presents multiple performances each year at the Bridge View Center of Ottumwa . Each performance is produced without adult cast members . Past performances include : “ Oliver Twist ,” “ The Wizard of Oz ,” “ The Best Christmas Pageant Ever ,” “ Disney ' s 101 Dalmatians ,” “ Jack and the Magic Beans ,” “ The Pied Piper ,” and “ Tom Sawyer ” among many others . Upcoming performances include “ God Rest Ye Gerry Mentlemen .” In addition to its performances , the Ottumwa Community Children ’ s Playhouse also puts on dances throughout the school year and hosts a summer camp . Ottumwa Community Players Ottumwa Community Players is a nonprofit community theater group made up entirely of local volunteers . The organization has produced shows at Bridge View Center as well as more intimate venues such as Market on Main and Hotel Ottumwa . The group has been producing quality community theater for more than 65 years .
