His Shadow ................................................. Q1/Poetry
His Shadow is a poem related to the Mexican murals of José Clemente Orozco in downtown Guadalajara. It is narrated in the point of view of his helper, Francisco. The genesis of this piece arrived at me when I visited the city center of Guadalajara on a school field trip. The tour guide explained Francisco's life and how he is portrayed in one of Orozco’s murals. The final piece wasn’t like that at the beginning; intensive proofreading added more to it. I was recommended, through peer feedback, to add the name of the helper but keep a mysterious touch so the reader can still perceive it. I also added more details about the history of muralist in Mexico, to spread a nationalistic sensation. In my opinion, one of the strongest aspects of this poem is the way I described Francisco in the following stanza. “And one day/In one painting/There I was, killing and killed/‘Forever remember and never forgotten', he once told me .” In this stanza, I was capable of describing with words an Orozco's murals, where Francisco appears. Personally, I believe this is one of my bests pieces and don’t need major changes, however, I could improve it by adding more information about who Francisco was and what else he did
in the artistic world.
