“I prefer to speedrun the final fantasy series,” Delatte said. “They take a while and can take a good chunk of time in your day. RPG’s such as Final Fantasy are my favorite thing to speed run. Usually indie games are faster if you’re looking into that.”
Faster paced games are great for starter speedrunners. Mega Man 11, Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; each of these games have their own tricks and mechanics but are built to the point anyone can pick them up and play. It is up to the player to learn the tricks and mechanics and practice on them to become even faster at playing. It is important to keep all of these tips and tricks in mind to determine what makes a speedrunner a decent speedrunner
Delatte believes a good speedrunner is someone who knows all the tricks within the game and keep up on commentary.
“To be a good speedrunner, someone needs to know what is going on and how to talk about it,” said Delatte. “They need to comment very well on what they are doing in the run, how they are doing it, and continue commentating while keeping up with the run.”
An important part of speed running rests within the community. Players want someone to compete with, they want records to challenge. A part of what keeps speed running alive is how many players participate within the genre. Within the streaming industry a let’s play is a one time thing. Someone plays through a new game of the current time and stretches it out across a long span of videos but with speed running that is not the case. It is about a one shot chance to contribute to the not only the streaming community but the gaming community as a whole. When a player streams a speed run, all eyes and attention is diverted to that specific player. The end goal is having contributed to such a large community and to earn that right of respect once that world record is earned.

John hornsby, a Junior Information Tech major realizes he does not need a particular preference to speed run.
“I don’t have a preference for speed running,” Hornsby said. “I believe anything should go, if you want to run it then you can run it. I will say when starting out, I would recommend to players starting on not necessarily an easy game but a game that is fast paced or has simple mechanics. Unless the player knows the mechanics of said game well enough.”
While other players will disagree to a free for all ruling, some players have to stick to what they have in mind.
