Speed, thrill, excitement, challenge, and quick wits; these are elements that create a speed running environment. Speed running is popular within the gaming community and world records have been logged and players to this day still challenge stapled records and try to obtain the best time possible.
Business administration major, Christopher Delatte stated “I think the reward is just accomplishment.” Christopher continued,” If you’re someone who ends up setting a world record, even if it is for a few days, you still have that accomplishment on you. People will start looking you up more and respecting you more within the community.”
Speed running is the idea of completing a game or certain challenge within a game at the fastest time possible. Records are still being created to this day with games all across the ages. Speed running counts for any and every game within the industry, ranging from Atari to modern consoles and titles.
Greg Bell who is a computer systems engineering graduate, now 36 has been speed running since 1994.
“I pulled up emulators with some friends and we started to race on different games,” Bell stated. “I started with Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo. My friends and I found out I was pretty good at it. We started putting money on the races. It became a five dollar buy in to see who was the fastest and with money involved that is pretty much why I started.”
It can always be difficult to figure out what game to stream and where to go when streamers and content creators alike have such massive libraries. When it comes to speed running players need to find their niche in what they want to prioritize. Some gamers speedrun Role playing games (RPG’s,) such as Final Fantasy, others speedrun Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies, Kingdom Hearts, games as simple as Super Mario Brothers. Speed running is not just a hobby but a gauntlet of skills and to harness that focus players need to understand their preference for what they wish to speed run.
