a goal early in the third period to
move further ahead. But the defiant St. Patrick’s didn’t drop their
heads and dug in. Over the next
few minutes, points were traded
back and forth and then the killer
blow, the St. Pats goal was breached
once more.
BLITZKRIEG
Trying in vain to salvage something from the tie, St. Patricks started to go for broke. They launched a
last gasp blitzkrieg of men forward,
bombarding the Dresden defence
again and again. Then, a screamer
of a goal from 25 meters for the
Irish. Was there time for a dramatic
comeback? The Dresden goal was
peppered now, but some inspired
goalkeeping and defending kept
the Irish at bay and with cramp
starting to set in, the final whistle
blew to the delight of the Dresden
Hurlers on a historic day in the
Sachsen capital. The final score line
- Dresden 5-11 St. Patricks 2-11. It
seems goals do win games.
Afterwards the Sachsen-Celtic
Cup was presented by Frank Doyle
to a delighted Dresden captain,
Konrad Menzel and the party begun for a fantastic night’s craic at
the Red Rooster Bar.

All the men of St. Patricks must
be given credit for the almighty
effort and huge commitment they
made to make this event happen.
This commitment is something
that we all here in Dresden will remember and appreciate for many
years to come. You battled to the
last minute and fought with true
sportsmanship throughout the
game. With the friendly banter and
craic given by you throughout the
weekend, it was a pleasure to host
you guys and we hope it was not the
last we see of each other. It would
be a shame to retire those new jerseys of yours! It is hoped that this
match can be rekindled in the next
year or two either in Dresden or in
Ireland. Let’s wait and see.
