On Saturday May 24, Galway and
Kerry played an entertaining championship opener. This was a close affair. Kerry were in confident mood
going into this one on the back of
reaching the O’Brien Cup Final but
Galway weren’t over-awed as they
led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half time. Galway
continued in this vain with a slender
lead for much of the second period
but approaching the last 10 minutes,
Kerry upping their game finished
the stronger with Joe Fitzpatrick
shooting 0-3 before a late goal by
Derrick Nolan sealed things. It got
heated near the end with red cards
dished out to Kerry’s Joe O’Shea and
Galway’s JJ Doyle. This latest victory
for Kerry sees them continue their
unbeaten run.
The first senior football championship game on Sunday saw defending champion’s Connemara
Gaels against Shannon Blues in a
hard fought game. When the Gaels,
helped by some new blood since
their O’Brien cup exit, grabbed a
smart 0-8 to no score lead in the
