ST. LOUIS St. Louis Hurling League, Round 7 MAY 31ST 2014 AOH COMMAND After the Memorial Day weekend off, the St. Louis Hurling League swung back into action with three games on the schedule for Week 7. These games were make-up games on account of missing Week 5 schedule due to the unavailability of St. Vincent Park. Prior to this latest round, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Na Fianna team were the ones to beat as they commanded the Leaderboard with a record of 5-1 with just points difference separating a close race for second between O’Shay’s, Tigin and Tower all on 4-2. Game 1 Saturday, May 31, saw a beautiful 80F day greet the teams with leaders Hibernians, on a two-win streak, taking on Nellies. The latter are having a tough year as they lie in the ‘Cellar’ with zero wins on 0-6. With the league in its fourth last round before the Playoff ’s, Nellies were desperate to get a win on the board. Indiscipline in their prior match didn’t help their cause either as they started without carded players. Little separated the teams at the half with AOH ahead by two points on 2-3 to 1-4. In the second period Hibernians pushed on with a brace of goals and a further six points and enough to take Nellies, who could only muster one goal in that half. Hibs top scorer, Mike Hertfelder was once again on song with 2-2, along with Mike Hill (1-3), while Tony Collin (1-0) and Tim Reinz (0-1) showed well for Nellies. 14 St. Louis League leaders, AOH Na Fianna, pose for a recent photo at St. Vincent Park. (Photo: St. Louis GAA) Game 2 This turned out to be a comfortable win for Tigin over Amsterdam. Tigin were coming off a good win against O’Shay’s last time while Amsterdam were hit and miss, having racked up a big win in Week 4, only to falter next time to Midwest Mortgage. Amsterdam was also down key players due to picking up cards the prior game. Though Tigin led by four at the break, Amsterdam were competitive and right in this game. Tigin turned on their offense in the second half with David Moran’s 0-7 and team captain, Dan Brown (0- 5) driving their side to a 2-17 to 1-12 win. Amsterdam tried hard with Pete DaPrato (0-7), Todd Chapman (0-2) and John Behl (10) influential but it wasn’t enough. Game 3 Tower ahead of their matchup with McGurks, were flying high on three straight wins, however, their opponents were struggling on 1-5 and needed something. They had started the season well having won their first game but nothing in the win column since. Unfortunately for McGurks, things didn’t improve in Week 7 as Tower scored early and often to run out comprehensive winners on a scoreline of 7-24 to 3-6. The Tower side was in cruise control at the half leading by 4-14 to 2-3. Three more goals in the second period and a further 10 points saw them home without much fuss. Enda O’Donovan caused havoc scoring 2-14 alone with Charlie Conners (2-0) also on song for Tower. So after Week 7, AOH remains top with the best record of
