BOSTON NORTHEAST GAA MAY 18 – MAY 25, 2014, Rory O’Donnell The Boston Northeast GAA early season competition in men’s football, the Pat O’Brein Cup, reached its penultimate round on May 18 with two teams coming through to make this year’s final. Donegal, who had a good run from the start of this cup, faced off in the first semi-final against the Boston Northeast 2013 Championship winners, Connemara Gaels who had also looked sharp. It turned out to be a thriller and had to go to Over Time with Donegal doing enough in the end to win by 1-13 to 1-11. In the second semi, we had Kerry looking like a team that meant business all through the competition while their opponents were the steady Shannon Blues. An early goal gave Kerry the initiative and they never looked back limiting the Blues to a solitary point in the second half. Donegal and Kerry’s championship meeting scheduled for June 15 will act as the final. The following week marked Memorial Day weekend at Canton, MA and it was fitting that the Barley House Wolves Junior C Hurling Team – a club formed by US combat veterans returning from Iraq through Shannon Airport, Ireland in 2005 – were honoured by the Boston Northeast for their role in promoting hurling throughout the New England region. The holiday weekend also kicked-off the opening rounds of this year’s Boston Northeast GAA Men’s Football Championship with four games on the schedule. 12 Tones and Macs in action at sunny Canton.
