New Leadership Positioning for the future: The next generation of Arlington Fire Department leaders... The last two years have been filled with consistent leadership change. The “Baby Boomer” generation is no longer the dominate group in the Fire Department. Many of the firefighters hired in the 1980’s have retired or are going to retire in the near future . “Generation X” and “Millennials” are now promoting into fire department leadership positions and within three years these groups will be fully responsible for the future forward progress of the Arlington Fire Department. New challenges are ahead and the AFD team will be prepared. Passing Command Newly promoted leaders since 2015: 27% (20 of 73) of Apparatus Operators have two years or less time in grade 22% (12 of 54) of Lieutenants have two years or less time in grade 47% (9 of 19) Captains have two years or less time in grade 54% (7 of 13) Deputy/Battalion Chiefs have two years or less time in grade DUTY / HONOR / COMPASSION 33 / EXCELLENCE
