Championing Great Neighborhoods goes beyond new buildings and innovative services. It’ s about ensuring every resident can realize their American Dream. The City of Arlington took major steps in FY 2024 to make that goal a reality.
CITY OF ARLINGTON ROLLS OUT TRASH CARTS
In February 2024, the City of Arlington took on the challenge of switching from manual trash pick-up to automated trash cart service, going from twice-a-week pick-up to once-a-week. To make this happen, City staff and Republic Services spent months preparing residents for the switch, teaching them how to properly dispose of trash, recycling and bulk trash, and the different options available for the new trash carts. This effort has assisted in ensuring neighborhoods are cleaner and residents receive more reliable trash service. The City successfully rolled out more than 100,000 trash carts to residents.
ARLINGTON PARKS AND RECREATION CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
Arlington Parks and Recreation celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2024. Arlington’ s first park, Meadowbrook Park, opened in 1924. To celebrate 100 years, Arlington Parks and Recreation held multiple special events, activities, historical features, spotlights, giveaways and more throughout the year. The 12-month celebration ended with the Meadowbrook Centennial Celebration in November 2024, where Parks and Recreation unveiled a new inclusive playground at the City’ s first park.
ACTIV RECREATION CENTER ALMOST COMPLETE, SET TO OPEN IN MARCH 2025
Arlington’ s newest recreation center, ACTIV Arlington, is set to open its doors in March 2025. The new 73,000-square-foot facility is Arlington’ s largest recreation center and will provide both indoor and outdoor programming for adults ages 50 and older.
Amenities include a full-court gymnasium, an indoor lap pool and an indoor hydrotherapy pool, four pickleball courts, a fitness area and a walking track. There’ s also a lounge with billiards, a special events space, arts and crafts room and more. Outdoor amenities include a patio, outdoor walking trails, six pickleball courts, and a community garden.
