CITY MAKES PROGRESS ON UNITY COUNCIL RECOMMENDATIONS
The City Council created the citizen-led Unity Council in 2020 to gather community input , research best practices and recommend strategies to promote and encourage greater equity and to advance unity across our community .
In February 2021 , the Unity Council presented its proposed racial equity plan to the City Council that focuses on five areas , economic disparities , education and workforce training , housing , health and wellness , policing and criminal justice . The report identifies 57 recommendations for short- , mid- and long-term goals based upon data analysis and community feedback . The recommendations address topics such as affordable housing , food deserts , internet access , relational policing and more .
As of the end of 2022 , the City of Arlington has made significant progress on the 57 recommendations set forth in the Unity Council ’ s inaugural report . Of the total 57 recommendations , 27 of them have been completed and are being sustained by ongoing efforts . Twenty-eight of the remaining recommendations are also in progress . Additionally , the Unity Council is working to prioritize the initiation of efforts on two recommendations addressing affordable housing and access to healthcare . The Unity Council ’ s work is part of the City ’ s commitment to equitable decision-making ; inclusionary policies and practices ; and , the elimination of institutional bias and other forms discrimination .
