City Council Commissions Unity Council to Create Racial Equity Plan
The Arlington City Council made its first appointments in July 2020 to the 28-member Unity Council , whose mission was to gather community input , research best practices and recommend strategies the City of Arlington could implement to promote and encourage greater equity across our community . The Unity Council ’ s work to create a racial equity plan is part of the City ’ s commitment to equality , inclusion , and the elimination of institutional racism and other forms of discrimination in its policies and practices .
After six months of research and a series of community conversations , the citizen-led Unity Council presented its proposed racial equity plan to the Arlington City Council in early 2021 .
The Beacon Recreation Center Opens
The Beacon Recreation Center officially opened its doors in Southeast Arlington in September 2020 . Indoor amenities include volleyball , pickleball and basketball courts , along with a weight room , fitness studio , community room , indoor track and kids club center . Outdoor amenities include a turf workout space , Aire Fitness pod , splash pad and a playground . The facility also features event spaces that can be rented for private parties , sporting events or practices , meetings or banquets .
