Arlington , Via and May Mobility Partner for Autonomous Vehicle Rideshare Program
The future of technology is now rolling through Arlington streets . But the work to make autonomous rideshare vehicles a reality began in FY20 . The City was awarded a $ 1.7-million federal grant in May and quickly got to work with our partners , Via and May Mobility . The groundbreaking service launched less than a year later .
Also in FY20 :
• Arlington converted another 1,431 traditional streetlight bulbs to LED lighting , leading to significant energy savings .
• Arlington ’ s Public Works and Transportation Department continues to pave the way in the use of smart city technology to improve traffic flow on Cooper Street . The Department installed automated devices on 31 traffic signals and two school zone signs . The devices collect and analyze signal and safety information in real-time . Drivers can receive the information directly in-vehicle if their car is equipped with connected vehicle technology .
Collins Street Grows in South Arlington
FY20 saw major upgrades completed on Collins Street . The project widened the street by constructing two additional lanes and adding southbound right turn lanes at both Arbrook Blvd . and I-20 .
Additional infrastructure improvements included replacing existing concrete panels as needed , adjusting water and sanitary sewer facilities , replacing streetlights , pavement markings , street signs , sidewalks , fiber conduit , and median landscaping and irrigation improvements .
