Enhancing Regional Mobility
M
iles of construction barrels, barricades and traffic cones, though frustrating for motorists, are signs of
real progress in the safety and maneuverability of Arlington’s streets. Major construction was under
way in many parts of Arlington in 2015, from a new bridge across Interstate 20 to a more pedestrianfriendly Lamar Boulevard in the northern side of town. Riders continued relying on the MAX commuter bus
services, and thanks to help from a local congressman, federal funding was restored for the Handitran bus
service. In The American Dream City, Arlington remains committed to enhancing regional mobility.
I-30/SH-360 Interchange
Project Funded
Arlington’s biggest
transportation news came
when the Texas Transportation
Commission awarded a $233
million construction contract for
the Interstate 30/State Highway
360 interchange project, making
it the largest Proposition 1 funded
project in the state.
In addition to building the new
direct connect interchange, the
I-30 and SH-360 mainlanes will
be rebuilt, and the Six Flags Drive
bridge over I-30 will be rebuilt from
two lanes to five lanes, extending
Six Flags Drive north to Avenue
H. Besides improving regional
mobility, Arlington leaders said
the project will open thousands of
acres for new development.
The interchange project is
expected to be complete by 2020.
