Aloft Hotel Set for Entertainment District A new hotel was announced for Arlington’s ever-growing Entertainment District. Starwood Hotels and Resorts revealed in January 2015 that it would build an Aloft brand hotel less than five minutes away from AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Park, Six Flags Over Texas, restaurants and other popular tourist attractions. The 136-room hotel, featuring loft-like rooms with cutting-edge design at an affordable price, is expected to open in 2016. Champions Park Approved In January 2015, the City Council approved zoning for the 14-acre Champions Park project in a prominent corner of the Entertainment District. Over the next decade, the Nehemiah Company plans to build a 1,328-unit luxury apartment complex along Lamar Boulevard east of Cooper Street. A major step in the developer’s vision involved razing three aging apartment complexes and preparing the site for the first 353 units. Where the old complexes were valued on the tax rolls at about $10 million, Arlington Commons is expected to have a $200-million taxable value when fully constructed. This publicprivate partnership will bring highquality apartment living at a scope and level not available elsewhere in the City. City Reaches Agreement With Developer for 101 Center The City reached a ground lease agreement and established a public-private partnership with Catalyst Urban Development, opening the way for construction of a mixed-use redevelopment project on the site of the former George W. Hawkes Central Library. The 101 Center project, which will include high-end residential units over a ground level of retail, restaurants and loft office space, is expected to transform downtown and spur additional private investment. The multistory project, which will include a structured parking garage, is expected to open in 2017 around the same time as the new downtown public library, City Council Chamber/community room and public plaza that collectively form the Arlington City Center.
