$300-million SH-360 South Project Breaks Ground
Work commenced on the approximately $300 million State Highway 360 South Project to ease road
congestion in and around Arlington, Grand Prairie and Mansfield. SH-360, a vital roadway connecting North
Texas communities in Tarrant, Ellis and Johnson counties, has more than 52,000 daily drivers. That number is
projected to increase to 174,000 daily drivers by 2030.
Plans for the 9.7-mile corridor,
which stretches from Green
Oaks Boulevard to US-287,
include constructing a four-lane
toll road between the existing
frontage roads, making cross
street improvements, creating
continuous non-tolled frontage
roads and building a US-287
bridge over 360.
The project is a partnership
between the Texas Department of
Transportation (TxDOT); the North
Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA);
the North Central Texas Council
of Governments (NCTCOG);
Lane-Abrams Joint Venture
(L|A JV); Ellis, Johnson and
Tarrant counties; and the cities
of Arlington, Grand Prairie and
Mansfield.
In addition to the $330 million
being paid by TxDOT, the City of
Arlington will provide $1.1 million
for intersection improvements
on Webb Lynn Road, Sublett
Road, Debbie Lane and New
York Avenue. An additional $3.2
million in funding from the 2014
Bond Election will help realign
the New York Avenue/Eden Road
intersection.
Abram Street Rebuild Aims
to Improve Mobility
MAX Bus Service Rolls Into
Third Year
In October 2015, work began
on an $8.1-million portion of the
Abram Street Rebuild Project
that stretches from Stadium Drive
to SH360. The Abram Street
Rebuild Project, part of the 2008
Bond Election, is set to ultimately
enhance mobility on the major
thoroughfare and make the area
more pedestrian friendly.
Ridership remained steady
for the MetroArlingtonXpress, or
MAX, commuter bus service as it
rolled into its third year of service.
According to online and onboard surveys, riders continued
to say they enjoy the alternative
commute option. About 84% of
riders on the weekday survey are
students or employed full time. At
least 59% of surveyed riders said
they want the service extended to
Saturdays.
Federal Funding Restored
for Handitran
With help from Congressman
Marc Veasey and support from
Senator John Cornyn in the
Senate, Handitran had a funding
victory in the 2015 Congressional
Session with the passing of
the Surface Transportation
Reauthorization and Reform Act.
The Act included a provision to
restore operations funding for
the Handitran program, which
provides transportation to 500
riders a day and continues to
be available to 16,000 eligible
persons in Arlington.
City Launches Street
Tracker Website
The City launched a
new Street Tracker webpage
that provides residents with
transparency and up-to-date
information on both current and
proposed street maintenance and
construction projects throughout
Arlington.
The webpage features an
interactive map, project list,
videos, a news feed featuring
the latest information on street
construction and contact
information for residents to report
street problems, such as potholes,
that they find in Arlington.
