Speaking about her role as an
executive producer she explains:
“An executive producer oversees
the entire show, works with a team
of associate and junior producers
and conceptualizes the direction
of the show.” Currently producing
a breakfast show hosted by
Bongani Bingwa, Andiswa says her
approach is different with each
presenter. “John Robbie was more
about what’s in for the listener, if
the story is big enough, then
Xolani Gwala with his journalism
background prefers hard
interviews with politicians to get
behind the facts and Bongani
Bingwa on the other hand is from
a Carte Blanche background
and is more about investigative
journalism and human-interest
issues,” shares Andiswa.
With the fast-paced nature of her
job, Andiswa says she got a way
with making the high-profile guests
agree for interviews when they are
being reluctant. “I’m transparent
with the guests about what kind
of an interview it will be; I’ve built
a lot of relationships with govern-
ment spokespersons and some-
times I call in favours,” she says.
“There are days where there are
no news and as a producer you
have to create something out of
nothing.” When asked about her
future plans as a content creator,
Andiswa says: “I want to be in
strategy because talk radio is
facing a lot of challenges, there
is a lot of competition now in a
form of podcasts; the needs of
listeners are changing, and
people don’t consume talk radio
like they used to.”
Besides winning the MTN Radio
Award, some of Andiswa’s
memorable moments of her
career include President Cyril
Ramaphosa coming for an
interview on Xolani Gwala’s
show, following up on the VBS
Bank scandal, getting an
interview with a contractor who
wasn’t paid and getting an
interview from Khosi Madzonga
who is the wife of the CEO
of Vele Investments, Robert
Madzonga.
