The Roses’ Folk in The Bar evenings continue to go from strength to strength, and 2014 sees a mixture of both new and returning artists. Brooks Williams (Tuesday 28 January) is one of the most versatile and entertaining performers on the acoustic roots music scene today. From Statesboro, Georgia in America, he is a fiery guitarist, a smoothas-silk vocalist and a stunning songwriter. With 20 albums to his name including his latest release in 2013 entitled New Everything, Williams’ music is heard all over the world. Brooks presents a classy mix of blues, raggy Americana and healthy new originals, impeccably sung and performed. With 50 years of singer/songwriter experience behind him, Bill Caddick (Tuesday 4 March) is now a master in his field. Having previously played with the Albion Band and the legendary folk-rock band The Home Service, Bill now continues to write bo th music and plays, making the lyrics to his songs a cut above the rest. Next, one of the most exciting duos to appear on the folk, roots and acoustic scene in recent years appears. The unique instrumentation of Philip Henry & Hannah Martin (Tuesday 25 March) gives a truly unique sound that spans many genres, from roots in the traditional music of the British isles, to Indian classical and American blues. Publicly voted Best Duo in the 2013 Spiral Awards, their latest album Mynd has received fervent critical acclaim. Their high energy live show is remarkable. Paul Downes’ (Tuesday 22 April) sensitive and yet fun approach to his performances put him among the most respected artists on the music scene today, having been introduced as one of the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world. It is easy to see why when you see the dazzling array of styles he performs with effortless brilliance, but at the same time he considers himself as a singer of songs, rather than a guitar technician. Of course, there are an equal number of events held in the auditorium too, and 2014 sees an impressive line up of iconic bands, beginning as always with Fairport Convention kicking off their winter tour with us on Friday 31 January. We are also looking forward to Lisbee Stainton joining us with her full band as she makes her debut appearance at The Roses (Friday 21 March). At the age of just 25, Lisbee now releases her fourth album Word Games. With many strings to her bow, Lisbee not only enjoys a fruitful solo career, but she also showcases her musical dexterity playing banjo, harmonium, guitar and harmonica in Seth Lakeman’s band. Last but definitely not least, don’t miss The Phil Beer Band on Friday 28 March, the high-energy Feast Of Fiddles on Tuesday 22 April or Black Country legend Raymond Froggatt on Sunday 27 April. Tickets for all events are available from The Roses on 01684 295074 or www.rosestheatre.org. ® Caroline Lawrence : www.rosestheatre.org
