The Folk Diary of events (www.glosfolk.org.uk) is well worth a
visit to keep up with what is going on in the county and nearby, with
over 200 events listed most months. (and those are just the ones we
know about!). If your concert, ceilidh, session, or club is not listed, then
do let me know. Diary is now fully searchable for ease of use, and
receives about 500 ‘hits’ a week!
Membership/e-mail listing is free, entries in the Folk Directory,
and Glosfolk Diary are also free.
Glosfolk is also on Twitter, http://www.twitter.com/glosfolk

Bill Pullen’s Blues Bulletin
Glos, Warks, & nearby Herefds & Worcs
Free night at short notice (31/8) found me at
‘The Marlbank’ near Welland (first time for
25 years!) to see ‘Journeyman’: fine vocals/
fiddle from Zoe, percussion/flute from Paul
Beadle, Mark (ex Roving Crows/Babbajack)
on bass & Andy (Lindsay) on guitar & vocals
Bill Pullen at the [former] Slip holding it all together: material included jigs
Inn. Much Marcle, Herefds
& reels, ‘Down where the drunkards roll’,
‘Mercedes Benz’, ‘It’s all over now’, more modern & original songs and a
rousing ‘Sympathy for the devil’ to end with. Thanks to Andy’s brother
Jim (a fine harp blower himself!) for tipping me off. At ® Forest Folk
Club (1/9) again first time in years) met Chico (Warminster) & Hilary
from Bristol who run Bath Acoustic Club (all welcome) plus old friend
Roger Drury and Ian Harvey/Jan Vaisey - and Keith Hyatt! I won’t leave
it so long in future.
Winchcombe (Wooden Horse/Mumbo Jumbo, etc), promoted by Dave
Wade, info www.facebook.com/winchcombelive ‘Yew Tree’, Conderton,
under new management, paid gigs continue: I’ve no plan to re-start
session, anyone else fancy it?
Fox, Leafield, Oxon. Session, 8.30 pm start. And nice set from locals’
Red Shift, incl. Emma (Indigo Kings) Stone on reeds & saxes, of folk/
acoustic material, with some self penned songs, at revived Northleach
Steam Rally (7/9).
More venues: occ. Concerts (incl. folk & blues) at the Barn, Hellens,
Much Marcle HR8 2LY. [email protected], 07854 798913;
tickets www.orpheus-events.com/versatile-arts; and following Seth
Lakeman’s successful gig at Gloucester cathedral, Friars folk & roots
are presenting a series, incl. Gigspanner/St. Agnes Fountain/Sean
Lakeman & Kathryn Roberts. Info/tickets from 08456 521823.
Also in Upton: told ‘Wheelhouse’ last Friday, very intermittent, check
before you travel, but bands (Barflys etc) every Saturday. R oger Davies
(Upton Folk Fest, etc.) now planning a monthly (?) Session in ‘the
Muggery’; and ‘the Morgan’ in Malvern has Sunday open session (4pm7pm approx.) to add to Wed. Open Mike (Tyler Massey).
Shifting Sundays: new venue sought for 1st week as Ettington
want to close on Sun nights - as has already happened at Farriers,
Todenham, where 5th. Sunday changed to 5th. Friday! And Sun 15/9
visit to Coughton Court cheese & pickle fest. Found a beer tent song/
music session (due to rain) with Chipping Camden Morris men after
they danced on the lawn, following Avoncroft folk dance group with
16th & 17th Century Promenades ........ and before Bedcote Morris
(from Staffordshire moorlands) with dances across from their county,
Shropshire, Lincs. & Norfolk! And Indigo Kings need a new guitarist
as Christian O’Connell concentrating on blues - hopefully with YT
sometimes!
New session at ‘Welwyn Arms’, Much Marcle (Sun/Thurs?), pub for
info., more as I hear it. Thurs monthly(?) Open Mike run by Perry
Foster at ‘Chestnut’, Worcester, so plenty of blues - also best wishes
to Annie who is poorly at the time of writing. Enjoying new Steve
Tilston trio album ‘Happenstance’ (ha!) with comeback harmonica
skills from Keith Warmington: and a look around Lady M.’s new home
town - Leominster- found live Sun afternoon music (incl. Blues) at the
‘Grape Vaults’ (same also applies to the ‘Lichfield Vaults’ in Hereford)
and the legend of Jenny Pipes· and the ducking stool (Priory church/
museum for more: I feel a song coming!), giving rise to ‘Jenny Pipes’
Morris’ ladies side, Thurs. 8.30pm at Stoke Prior village hall, Facebook,
telephone 01568 610211, email [email protected]
Missed Arkfest at Malvern (prior engagement at Sankey marine,
Evesham): any report from spectators/those taking part? (29/9).
And Americana/roots/blues monthly 3rd Fridays at ‘White Hart’,
‘Folking Marvellous’ are putting on events in the north Cotswold /
west Oxon border area, with international & local artists: the most
recent being American old-timey band ‘The Blacktwig Pickers at
Stretton on Fosse village hall nr. Moreton in Marsh. For more info check
out Facebook, ring Gary on 07795 430403, or folkingmarvellous@
gmail.com, tickets from wegottickets.com or local outlets as
advertised. Talking Moreton, first full gig of ‘Rough’n Ready’ (YT &
Colin Rickards) for 20 years at ‘The Bell’ on 3/ 10 !
Scottish legends the Bully Wee band (I remember them at Granny’s
Club in Chelt & the old Cherrytrees motel club in Alcester) are on
tour in Jan 2014 ~ with a line up that includes fiddle maestro Ian
Cutler (‘The Wicker Man’, Feast of Fiddles, etc): dates include South
Petherton, Topsham, Bishop’s Cleeve, Nettlebed, & Great Torrington,
with Phil Beer as a special guest on all but the last named. More from
www.bullyweebaod.com
Occ. Sun jam/open mike at Green Room, Chelt. Playhouse: enjoyed
playing with Loz & Bill (‘Bell’, Bath Road session), Dave Lloyd & Dik
Cadbury (Decameron, Dave Harper band, Millstream studios, etc)
at opener. More info [email protected]. New Thurs fortnightly
session at Great Malvern hotel (Ray & Paul), contact for info: ????
Good audience for ® Colin Pitts/’Rough’n Ready’ at ‘Apple & Ale’ at
® ‘The Fleece’ barn (12/10).
1st Shifting Sunday session now at the Gate, Upper Brailes; new occ.
old-timey/bluegrass gigs at Beckford village hall, info. 07584 550545
or [email protected]; and with OBB/Anoraks’ commitments
reduced, I’m looking for a guitarist for ‘North~ and West~ over the
border’ & ‘long haul’ Glos. Gigs as they occur - any interest out there?
Mainly blues with a dash of folk/roots .............
Finally, at a Norwood Arms house-band session recently, met a great
cajun-style accordionist (his 1st visit, didn’t note his name) who
joined YT and band for a rousing ‘Matchbox’ and ‘Citrus Fruit Song’!
Future collaboration maybe?
Bon Ton Roulez!
