Future Solar Farm at Dulles International Airport

Dominion Energy and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority ( MWAA ) have teamed up to develop the largest renewable energy project ever at a U . S . airport . Spanning across 835 acres at Dulles International Airport , the project will combine utility-scale solar and reliable battery storage to power more than 37,000 Virginia homes .
“ This partnership will result in the largest renewable energy project ever developed at a U . S . airport . It ’ s just one of many ways the Airports Authority is constantly working to be a good steward of the environment . We look forward to working with Dominion Energy to help provide emission-free electricity to serve the growing energy needs of the Dulles community and the National Capital Region ,” said Jack Potter , President and CEO , MWAA .
The project also includes a first-of-its-kind lease agreement that will further advance renewables and clean transportation at Dulles . Instead of annual lease payments to Dulles , Dominion Energy Virginia will develop two solar carports to partially power Dulles facilities , and provide 16 electric buses , 50 electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging stations for Dulles operations .

Construction will begin in late 2023 and is expected to be complete by late 2026 .
