REAGAN NATIONAL RUNWAY REHABILITATION PROJECT
Reagan National Airport is the busiest runway in the United States . On average , an astounding 819 takeoffs and landings occur everyday . With so many planes passing through , it ’ s no surprise the airport ’ s runways have started showing signs of wear and tear .
A resurfacing and rehabilitation project kicked off in May for the primary runways . Construction crews have been working tirelessly overnight , replacing base materials up to a depth of 6 to 8 inches . The project aims to ensure the long-term durability of all runways at the airport . Since the project ’ s inception , construction teams have made great progress , not only along the primary runway , but also at the crucial intersection points .
The success so far is a testament to the teamwork between Reagan ’ s operations department , engineering team and airline partners . Their coordinated efforts have not gone unnoticed , as local and national news media have been captivated by their work . Recently , the airport ’ s media relations team partnered with the airport operations department to give tours to NBC 4 reporter Adam Tuss , WAMU reporter Jordan Pascale , and NBC News correspondent Tom Costello . The three-hour tours offered up-close looks into paving operations on the main runway , the intersection work and base materials at the onsite plant .
With the progress made so far , the airport administration estimates the project will be completed by late 2024 . It ’ s an exciting time for Reagan National Airport as it strives to modernize its infrastructure and continue providing exceptional service to its passengers .
