The virus, which causes birth defects such as microcephaly, is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes sp. mosquito, an insect type rarely seen in the Midwest region. However, health care professionals in Kentucky should remain cautious. An estimated 80 percent of persons infected with Zika virus are asymptomatic. Symptomatic disease is generally mild. The most common symptoms of Zika virus include fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Symptoms typically begin 2 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
