JOIN THE PRESTIGIOUS WEAR THE WHITE COAT PROGRAM!
GREATER LOUISVILLE MEDICAL SOCIETY
WEAR THE
WHITE
COAT
This fall, GLMS will proudly host the 6th annual Wear the White Coat program, giving business and community leaders the unique opportunity to shadow a physician preceptor for a day. GLMS wants you as a preceptor!
The program begins Wednesday, October 12, at 7:15 a. m. with breakfast at the Old Medical School Building. There, preceptors and community leaders will be introduced and schedule a day of shadowing. Following individual shadowing sessions, a reception and dinner will be held at the same location on Wednesday, November 9 from 6:00 to 8:30 p. m.
Wear the White Coat is an excellent opportunity for physicians to get involved and network with other Louisville community leaders. Preceptors and community participants have repeatedly praised the program for allowing a window behind the scenes of practicing physicians. Please share your time to show someone how incredible it is to be a physician.
To volunteer as a physician preceptor, contact Membership Coordinator Jennifer Howard at jennifer. howard @ glms. org or 502-736-6362.
U OF L WELCOMES CLASS OF 2020
GLMS President John Roberts, MD, and UofL Class of 2019 President Carlos Lynes address incoming freshman.
The University of Louisville School of Medicine and GLMS physicians welcomed the class of 2020 during the annual White Coat Ceremony on Sunday, July 24, at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.
Following tradition, physicians and professors fondly and proudly put the fresh new white coats on 156 incoming medical school freshmen. For the students, the afternoon was a brief reward for years of hard work and determination. For their family and friends, it was a joy to watch as they took another step towards the dream of practicing medicine, now with freshly imparted wisdom from experienced physicians.
School of Medicine Dean Toni Ganzel, MD, MBA, FACS, welcomed students to the ceremony.“ Class of 2020, we are glad you have chosen to be a part of our Louisville medicine family. We chose you very carefully because we know you are capable of being great doctors. We pledge to you to be the best we can be, to educate you, inspire you and support you on your great journey to becoming a physician.”
The keynote speaker was Dr. Barry Kerzin, Buddhist monk, physician to the Dalai Lama, and Founder and President of the Altruism in Medicine Institute in the Unites States, as well as the Human Values Institute in Japan. He spoke about recognizing negative emotions and maintaining compassion as a caregiver.
Speaking graciously, Dr. Kerzin said,“ You are human beings first. Your identity is not defined by exam scores. I hope you won’ t forget that. It’ s very easy to fall in to that kind of thinking, that you are so and so percentage. That’ s a small piece of the whole big picture of being a mature, thriving and meaningful human being and doctor.”
After receiving their white coats, the students heard from GLMS President and U of L Professor and Associate Dean John Roberts, MD, who welcomed the new medical students to the school with open arms.
“ You look both excited and scared to death. That’ s okay. We’ ve all been there. Today will be an unforgettable day in your professional life and in the memories of your families,” he said.
Dr. Roberts chose carefully his words of advice.“ In the busy days ahead, do not forget the altruism and the compassion, the desire to help people in their neediest of times that caused you to take this path.” To read his entire speech to students, see Doctor Roberts’“ From the President” article in the September issue of Louisville Medicine.
