National Employment Returns (NER) 2018
Current Vacancies
The labour market is dynamic, flexible and ever changing. Vacancies in organisations occur because of
resignations, retirement, dismissals and promotions. It can also be due to changes in the organisation
structure, formation of a new entity, or change in business processes.
When there is a tight labour market, it takes longer and becomes more difficult to fill the vacancies.
There is inevitably some degree of mismatch between supply and demand. Skills shortages make it
harder for companies to hire and most of them would find it difficult to recruit highly-skilled and
technical workers. NER 2018 explores the job vacancies in the market and reasons behind why
vacancies are difficult to fill.
Analysis by Sector
At an overall level, only one third of the establishments declared available job vacancies, with the
Information & Communication and Manufacturing sectors having the highest number of establishments
with vacancies.
