Education Level
Overall Observations
Figure 3.2 shows that at least one third of Malaysian employees employed by the establishments in
NER 2018 is tertiary educated. 43% of them had at least secondary education qualifications. About 4%
of the employees received up to primary education level and there were still 4% of them who did not
receive any formal education. On the other hand, only 4% of the Malaysian workforce have received
up to SKM education level (TVET-equivalent qualifications).

Sectoral Breakdown
NER 2018 results show that at least 50% of employees within the Information & Communication and
Financial & Insurance/Takaful sectors had degree qualifications and above (refer to Figure 3.3). Those
employed in Transportation & Storage, Mining & Quarrying, Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing,
Manufacturing, Wholesale & Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles or Motorcycles, and
Accommodation & Food Service sectors had the highest share of employees who attained secondary
education or less.
