6. ESTABLISHMENTS/EMPLOYEES CHARACTERISTICS
Establishments Characteristics
This section describes the characteristics of the establishments covered in NER 2018. The establishment
is a unit of analysis where it refers to a productive activity operating in one location. An establishment
may be either an operations office, a branch or even the business entity’s headquarters. Wherever
possible, comparisons with data from previous NER studies are made. Figure 1.1 provides a snapshot
of the establishments profiled in NER 2018.

Overall Observations
Analysis by Geography & States
NER 2018 covered a total of 284,962 establishments, of which 76% of them were located in Peninsular
Malaysia, while 23.8% in East Malaysia (refer to Figure 1.2).
