Mass Effect
the movie
I'm constantly being asked about the status of the Mass Effect movie so here's everything we know so far.
Legendary Pictures bought the film rights for Mass Effect several years ago. It’s worth mentioning that the studio has a great reputation in regards to developing properties/projects they purchase the rights to; as in they have never bought the film rights to a project and not made the movie. Bioware officially announced the project on May 24th 2010.Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, and Avi Arad are producing, with BioWare's own Casey Hudson serving as an executive producer. Morgan Davis Foehl is writing the script.
Legendary Pictures has confirmed that the movie will be an adaptation of the 1st Mass Effect game. The production on the film is moving very slowly but according to LP and Ari Arad the project is still alive.
In a recent interview about the now in production World of War Craft movie Legendary Pictures CE0 Thomas Tull was asked about the upcoming Mass Effect film, here’s what he had to say.
“That's another story that we love, and it's incredibly sprawling and complex. We're not going to screw up Commander Shepard. That's another one of those things where we're being a little bit precious about it, but unless we feel like we can absolutely crack it and know what the movie is, we're just not in the position where we have to make stuff just because we have to. That's the way we treat every one of these. I'm a huge Mass Effect fan. I play. I'm personally a fan of all these different things, and we don't to screw them up, so that's the way we go into these. The bar is very high, and that's just our approach.”
“Yeah, I think the canon they've created is sophisticated. It's very broad, meaning you can't pitch that in 30 seconds, right? It's a complex story. So it is challenging. If it wasn't challenging, the movie would have been out by now, but it is. We've just got to stick to our guns that, if it's a movie that's going to come from us, we want it to be great. If we can't crack that yet then we just have to keep working.”
According to our sources at the studio we are looking at a 2017/2018 debut for the film. It appears they are saving the best for last with other video game adaptations coming sooner like Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid. which producer Ari Arad is said to be involved in all. For those of you hoping to see your personal choices from the game some how be incorporated into the film,
