(interview continuation)

Of course, there are lots of Mass Effect fans out there as well, and I do have some other ideas of my own I want to explore at some point. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what works best once I finish Chaos Unleashed.

M: Which side of the Force do you personally feel drawn to and why?

D: I actually think both the light and dark side are too extreme in their

philosophies. The light side pushes people to be emotionless paragons of virtue, which I don't think is realistic. And the dark side can lead to cruelty and selfishness if you push it too far. So I guess I'd probably be a gray Jedi who tried to find a balance between both sides.

M: You state on your website you are almost done with a screenplay, care to tell us about it?

D: I don't really like to discuss projects that aren't out yet in detail, but I do have a few screenplays that I've been kicking around. I try to do something different with the screen plays than the novels - I

like to branch out into other genres. One is a historical action/adventure film, the other is a slapstick romantic comedy. I don't know if they will ever get made into films, but I wanted to see what it was like to write something outside my comfort zone.

M: Can you tell us about your new book, Children of Fire?

D: Children of Fire is the first book in my original fantasy trilogy; it focuses on four children touched by the spell of Daemron the Slayer, an ancient god trapped by a magical barrier called the Legacy. Bound by a connection deeper than blood, the Children of Fire - Wizard, Warrior, Prophet and King - will

either restore the fading Legacy or bring it crashing down, freeing Daemron to wreak his vengeance upon the mortal world.

This is my homage to the great fantasy authors I read growing up, like Tolkien, Terry Brooks, David Eddings and GRRM, but written in my own unique style. The book is fast paced, with multiple point-of-view characters, lots of action and magic, and a bit of dark horror sprinkled over everything.

Again, I would like to thank Mr. Karpyshyn for taking the time to answer a few questions. He has retired from BioWare to work on his own projects. He currently lives in Austin, TX.
